What nonprofits say: The media is big and scary, they don't have time for my little thing.
What the media says: We want to help!
Building a relationship with your local TV stations, radio stations, and newspapers doesn't have to be rocket science, but you don't have to be a stalker either. All it takes is getting to know what journalists and hosts need to do their jobs so they can help promote you!
What's a PSA? Should I have a volunteer record a spot and send it to everyone? Who should I send things to? Wait, what's a media sponsorship... are they going to give us money? Elaine McNamara from 97.5 FM The Rock in Carlyle, Illinois is here to answer all of your questions about cozying up to local media.
You can find the Rock on your dial at 97.5 FM near Carlyle or at www.wdljfm.com, on TuneIn, and on Facebook. If you're in the area and want to submit something about your organizition, send it to community@wdljfm.com.

Friending volunteers... at mentioning board members on Twitter... LinkingIn with staff... attending networking events three evenings a week... dinner with a colleague from another organization.
Forget work-life balance, for those of us that live the nonprofit life, work-life integration is where we're trending.
How do you use your social media presence in a way that promotes your personal brand, enhances your organization, and lets your authentic voice be heard to those who you want to hear it? How much social should be in your networking? It's a complicated issue, so Marjorie and Natalie grabbed a bottle of wine to figure out some answers.

They say two things are inevitable, death and taxes. You might be pretty sure where you’re headed after death, but do you ever wonder where your hard earned money is going? The government of course!
But working with the government can be tricky. How to start collaborating, how to get funding, how to keep a relationship as administrations change?
Irene Agustin has been on both sides. As a social worker, former Executive Director and now government employee, she’s see it all and is here today to bring some tips about working with the government so we all reach our community goals together.
Irene is the Chief Program Manager, Homeless Services Division for the City of St. Louis, MO. You can connect with Irene on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. by email at agustini@stlouis.mo.gov or call her at 314-675-1702.

You probably read the article from the Charleston City Paper by Angel Postell entitled Constantly Asking Restaurants to Give Freebies to Charities has Got to Stop.
Owner of BEAST Craft BBQ Co. in Belleville, IL, David Sandusky had to respond to Angel and all other restaurant owners who don't think that giving is part of a smart business plan.
David shared his strategy and motivation for giving to the community and what nonprofits can do to increase their chances of a gift... but not his recipe for the fry sauce that Marjorie can't get enough of.
You can show your support for this true community supporter by going to BEAST Craft BBQ Co. at 20 S Belt W, Belleville, IL 62220, going to their website at http://www.beastcraftbbq.com/ or calling 618-257-9000 or checking them out on Facebook.

When your work and life balance really looks like work life soup, it's hard to know when it's the right time to promote your mission to your friends and family.
Is Christmas dinner the right time to ask if Aunt Ethel will come to the Gala? Is after church the right time to talk to your fellow congregants about volunteering?
Marjorie and Natalie pop open a bottle of wine to discuss when the time is right to promote your mission and when it's just not.
